The US Southern Command has been targeting vessels suspected of smuggling narcotics, but their operations have been shrouded in secrecy. While the command has not disclosed the exact locations of these strikes, it's clear that they've been active in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific regions for the past three months.
But here's where it gets controversial: the Trump administration has labeled these operations as a non-international armed conflict, a move that legal experts argue may violate established laws.
Since the start of the "war on drugs," there have been over 30 strikes on vessels, resulting in more than 110 fatalities. The very first attack, which occurred on September 2nd in international waters, has drawn significant scrutiny from Washington lawmakers.
