Unemployed Teacher Trainees Threaten Protest Ahead of 2026 Budget Presentation
Graduates from the 2023 batch of Colleges of Education are gearing up to take to the streets on November 10 if the government fails to provide a definite timeline for their recruitment into the Ghana Education Service (GES).
These trainees, who have completed their national service and passed the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination, have been waiting for nearly two years without being posted. Despite numerous petitions and meetings with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the GES, they claim no concrete response has been received.
Eshun De-Graft Brown, Vice President of the Concerned Unemployed Teacher Trainees, expressed the group's frustration. He stated, 'We've been asking for a clear timeline for our recruitment, but with no word, we're told the Public Accounts Committee will meet the Minister of Education on Monday. We want to know when we'll get the green light.'
Mr. De-Graft Brown further emphasized that with the 2026 national budget presentation scheduled for November 13, the group will not remain passive. He warned, 'By November 10, we plan to take our demands to the streets if we don't receive a clear timeline from the GES, the Ministry of Education, or the Ministry of Finance.'
The teacher trainees argue that the prolonged delay has caused financial strain and threatens the validity of their teaching licenses. They are urging the government to prioritize their recruitment and honor the promises made to previous batches.
