Subtle, a voice AI startup, has unveiled a new pair of wireless earbuds designed to enhance communication in noisy environments. The earbuds, priced at $199, feature advanced noise cancellation technology, ensuring clear audio during calls and precise transcription for voice notes. The company plans to ship them in the U.S. within the next few months. The Subtle app, available for iOS and Mac, allows users to take voice notes or engage in AI-powered conversations without the need for key presses. One of the key features is the ability to wake the iPhone even when it's locked, thanks to a specialized chip. This innovation sets Subtle apart from other AI-powered voice dictation apps, such as Wispr Flow, Willow, Monolouge, and Superwhisper, by enabling dictation across various apps. Subtle's earbuds are claimed to deliver five times fewer errors than the combination of AirPods Pro 3 and OpenAI's transcription model. During a demo, the earbuds demonstrated their ability to capture audio in noisy backgrounds and transcribe whispered voice notes accurately. Subtle's co-founder and CEO, Tyler Chen, emphasized the growing adoption of voice as a new interface, stating that it offers more natural interactions compared to keyboards. However, he also noted that people often avoid using voice interfaces in public settings. Subtle's noise isolation model aims to address this issue, providing consumers with a seamless voice interface experience through its earbuds. Last year, companies like Sandbar and Pebble introduced smart rings for note-taking, and Chen believes that Subtle's earbuds, combined with the app, offer a comprehensive solution that integrates dictation, AI chat, and voice notes into a single package. Pre-orders for the Voicebuds are now available on the Subtle website, with options in black and white. Subtle has secured $6 million in funding and has been collaborating with consumer tech companies like Qualcomm and Nothing to optimize their noise isolation models. TechCrunch will be hosting an event in San Francisco from October 13-15, 2026, where Subtle is expected to showcase its latest advancements.
