Should North Macedonia Skip Eurovision 2026? A Bold Decision Sparks Debate
In a move that's sure to spark discussion among Eurovision fans, the Program Council of MRT, North Macedonia's public broadcaster, has recommended sitting out the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest. This decision, outlined in meeting notes from October 27th, suggests a strategic pause until 2027. But here's where it gets interesting: they're not just stepping back, they're refocusing on their own musical roots.
The Council argues that a year off will allow them to develop a comprehensive strategy for future Eurovision participation. They acknowledge the contest's power to showcase North Macedonia's culture, music, and talent, but believe a well-planned approach is crucial for success. This includes detailed preparation, strong production values, and sufficient financial backing.
And this is the part most people miss: Instead of rushing into Eurovision, the Council recommends channeling energy into revitalizing domestic music festivals like âCvetniciâ and âSkopje Festival.â This shift aims to nurture local talent and strengthen the country's musical identity.
Interestingly, this recommendation came just days before MRT published its 2026 Program Plan, which stated that a final decision on Eurovision participation was still pending. The Plan highlights the multifaceted considerations involved, including production costs, artist selection, and past experiences.
The MRT editorial board will ultimately decide North Macedonia's Eurovision fate. Broadcasters have until mid-December to confirm their participation, leaving fans in suspense.
North Macedonia's Eurovision journey began in 1998 (as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), with a best result of 7th place in 2019 thanks to Tamara Todevska's powerful performance of âProud.â Their last appearance was in 2022 with Andrea's âCircles,â which unfortunately didn't qualify for the Grand Final.
Is this a wise strategic move or a missed opportunity? Does focusing on domestic music festivals truly benefit a country's Eurovision prospects? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
