MinRes Supports Life-Saving Medical Research at the Perkins Institute (2026)

A bold statement: Uniting for a Cause: The Power of Community in Medical Research.

In a world where diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes affect so many, a dedicated team of researchers at the Perkins is determined to make a difference. With a mission to improve outcomes for those facing these challenges, they are backed by strong partnerships and the unwavering support of the community.

Mineral Resources (MinRes) stands out as a proud partner, having contributed over $2 million since 2018 to advance medical research. But here's where it gets controversial: is it enough to simply provide financial support, or should companies actively engage their employees in these causes?

MinRes seems to believe in the latter, as evidenced by their enthusiastic participation in the annual Cancer 200 Ride for the Perkins. Over seven years, their employees have raised an impressive $3.2 million, demonstrating their commitment to making a tangible impact.

And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the money. It's about the human connection and the shared experience of pushing through challenges together. This is exemplified by the Perkins Plunge, a unique 12-hour overnight team relay swim.

The Plunge, in its inaugural year in 2024, brings together corporate teams, researchers, and passionate community members. They leap into chilly pools, swimming with determination to raise critical funds for medical research. It's a powerful symbol of the collective effort needed to drive progress in this field.

MinRes GM Commercial Jodie Winnett, an experienced endurance athlete, is gearing up for her second Plunge. Despite her impressive feats, including multiple Rottnest Channel Swims and the Port to Pub ultra marathon, she acknowledges the unique challenge of the Plunge. It's a testament to the event's ability to test even the most seasoned athletes.

For Jodie, the Plunge holds a deeper meaning. She says, "I'm proud to be part of the MinRes team, swimming through the night for a cause that's impacted so many of us. When it gets tough, I'll be thinking of those close to me who've faced these diseases, and that will give me the strength to push through."

Professor Peter Leedman, CEO of the Perkins, echoes this sentiment. He believes the Plunge symbolizes the collective effort required to propel medical research forward. "It's more than just a fundraising event," he says. "It's a celebration of resilience, both of our researchers and of the human spirit."

Among the MinRes team members participating in the Plunge are sisters Elia and Makayla Felix. Their motivation is deeply personal: they swim in memory of their aunty, Toni, who lost her battle with cancer in 2023.

Elia shares, "My Zia was like a second Mum to me. Her diagnosis and passing have shaped my perspective on life. By participating in the Plunge, I hope to contribute to advancements in cancer treatment, so that no one has to hear the devastating news of a limited lifespan ever again."

Through its social investment program, MinRes continues to support initiatives that benefit the communities it operates in. The company's commitment to making a positive impact is evident in its actions, not just its words.

So, is it enough for companies to simply donate, or should they actively involve their employees in these causes? What do you think? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
