A heated moment on the court! Notre Dame's coach, Micah Shrewsberry, found himself in a whirlwind of emotions after a nail-biting loss to California in a recent basketball game. The game's dramatic ending sparked a fiery reaction, showcasing the raw passion that coaches pour into their teams. This story has been updated with statements from Micah Shrewsberry and the ACC.
The game, which took place on Friday, January 2nd, saw a series of controversial calls that ultimately led to Notre Dame's defeat. With Notre Dame leading 71-68 in the final seconds, California's Dai Dai Ames made a three-pointer while drawing a foul. Initially, the referee signaled an 'and-1' opportunity, but the call was then overturned, stating the foul occurred before the shot.
But here's where it gets controversial... The referee then reversed his decision again, counting the basket and sending Ames to the free-throw line. Ames's successful free throw put California ahead, 72-71, with only five seconds remaining.
After a timeout, Notre Dame had one last chance to win, but Braeden Shrewsberry's three-point attempt bounced off the rim, sealing their fate.
As soon as the final buzzer sounded, Micah Shrewsberry's emotions boiled over. He charged towards the referee, visibly enraged, and had to be restrained by his players and staff. He later participated in the postgame handshake line with the Cal team.
Later, Shrewsberry issued a public apology through the team's official account. He admitted his actions were inappropriate and not representative of the values he strives to uphold. He apologized to his team, the university, the opposing coach, and the ACC.
And this is the part most people miss... The ACC also released a statement, publicly reprimanding Shrewsberry for his actions and considering the matter closed.
The loss was particularly tough for Notre Dame, who had led for most of the game, even by as much as 12 points at one stage. With just 16 seconds remaining, they were still up 69-65, making the final outcome even more heartbreaking.
