Measles Outbreak: New Cases and Urgent Calls for Vaccination
The measles outbreak continues to spread, with the total number of confirmed cases rising to 17 nationwide. Health authorities are urging the public to take action as the virus poses a significant risk to vulnerable populations.
Auckland and Beyond: The Outbreak's Reach
The latest case was detected in Auckland, linked to a previous overseas-acquired infection. This brings the total number of known cases to 17, with cases confirmed in Northland, Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington, and Nelson. The outbreak has sparked concern among health professionals and the public alike.
Vaccination as a Priority
Health Minister Simeon Brown announced the arrival of additional Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccines next month. With approximately 117,000 MMR vaccines in storage and another 28,000 on the way, the government aims to strengthen the country's immunity. Brown emphasized the importance of full immunization to control the outbreak.
Pharmac's Assurance and Supply Management
Claire Pouwels, a pharmaceutical funding manager at Pharmac, assured the public that the agency maintains a substantial safety buffer of vaccines. On average, around 15,000 doses are used each month, and during the 2019 outbreak, the total usage was an impressive 88,130 doses over two months. Pouwels stated that current stock levels are sufficient to meet expected demand during an outbreak.
Rising Demand and Close Contacts
In Wellington, where hundreds of individuals are considered close contacts, there has been a notable surge in vaccine orders over the past few days. Similar trends are observed in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Whangārei. Pharmac's ability to quickly source extra stock if needed ensures a steady supply.
Susceptible Populations and Immunization Records
Dr. Oz Mansoor, Tairāwhiti Medical Officer of Health, revealed that due to vaccination levels, over 500,000 New Zealanders remain susceptible to measles. He strongly recommends that all New Zealanders check their immunization records and consult their GPs or the free Vaccination Helpline (0800 28 29 26) for guidance.
Impact on Schools: Wellington Girls' College
The outbreak's impact on schools is evident at Wellington Girls' College, where a measles-infected student attended classes on Tuesday and prizegiving events on Wednesday. Over 900 close contacts were identified, leading to a temporary closure for Year 9-11 students until Wednesday. The school's staff provided essential support during this challenging period.
Stay Informed and Take Action
As the outbreak persists, staying informed and taking proactive measures are crucial. The government's efforts to ensure vaccine supply and public health awareness are essential steps in controlling the spread of measles. By working together, New Zealanders can protect themselves and their communities from this preventable disease.
