JWST Demand EXPLODES! Record Number of Proposals for Cycle 5 (2025)

Another Record Proposal Submission From JWST Observers - Astrobiology

The demand for JWST observations is skyrocketing, with an unprecedented surge in both the number of proposals submitted and the average time requests. This surge in interest is a testament to the astronomical and planetary science communities' eagerness to explore a diverse range of projects that could revolutionize our understanding of the universe.

The Cycle 5 Call has resulted in an astonishing 2,935 proposals, covering a vast array of scientific endeavors. These include 2,639 General Observer proposals for an impressive 101,751 hours, surpassing the initial offer of 8,000 hours with an oversubscription ratio of 13:1. The breakdown also includes 53 Survey proposals, 14 Pure Parallels, 243 Archival Research, 116 Target of Opportunity, and 105 Joint Programs with renowned telescopes and observatories such as HST, ALMA, Chandra, Keck, XMM, NOIRLab, NRAO, and TESS.

Cycle 5 introduces two special initiatives: Long-Term Monitoring, with 52 proposals, and Roman Preparatory Science Programs, attracting 35 proposals. The distribution of proposals across various science categories mirrors previous cycles, indicating a consistent pattern of interest in different areas of study.

The JWST community is expanding rapidly, with 7,509 unique investigators from 59 countries and 47 U.S. states contributing to the Cycle 5 proposals. This diverse group of scientists, representing various career stages and institutions, brings a wealth of expertise and perspectives to the table.

This vibrant community is the driving force behind the rigorous peer review process, which is essential for ensuring a fair and thoughtful evaluation of proposals. By subjecting each proposal to scrutiny, the peer review system guarantees that the selected science aligns with JWST's invaluable time and resources.

To support this critical process, approximately 540 panelists have been recruited for the Cycle 5 Telescope Allocation Committee. The STScI recognizes the invaluable contribution of these panelists and encourages those who have participated in previous cycles to continue their dedication. Given the growing demand for JWST time, the STScI will actively seek reviewers from the JWST community for future cycles.

If you receive an invitation to join the TAC or have the opportunity to volunteer, it is highly recommended to accept. Your involvement is crucial, as it will play a significant role in maximizing the mission's scientific output. Despite the time commitment, many reviewers find the experience rewarding, knowing their contributions are instrumental in advancing our understanding of the cosmos.
