The safety of Indian students studying abroad is a growing concern, with a recent report revealing a startling trend. Over half of the complaints filed by Indian students in foreign countries originate from Russia, a country once considered a safe haven for medical education. But here's where it gets controversial... The sharp rise in discrimination and exploitation cases over the last three years has sparked serious safety concerns among students and their families. While Russia has long been a preferred destination for Indian students due to its lower fees and simpler admission processes, the recent surge in complaints has led many to question the safety of studying there. 'During my sixth year, a group of foreign students attacked Indian students in the hostel kitchen over a minor argument and threatened them with a knife,' said Kanishka K, a graduate from Bashkir State Medical University (BSMU), Moscow. 'Many such incidents are never reported because students are scared of being targeted or expelled.' This is the part most people miss... The data from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlights a disturbing pattern, with Moscow emerging as the main hotspot for these incidents. The large number of Indian students in Russia, many of whom are enrolled in medical courses, are facing discrimination and harassment from students from other countries, as well as alleged mental harassment by universities. 'Complaints are rarely taken seriously. Students suffer in silence as universities often sideline them,' said D Kaushal, coordinator of All FMGs. 'Such expulsions leave students in severe financial and psychological distress.' And this is the part most people miss... The FMG groups have also flagged racial profiling and verbal abuse, with some universities admitting more than 1,200 students and later expelling them, even in the sixth year. As a result, many Indian students are now choosing countries like Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, with the number of Indian students choosing Russia declining significantly in recent years. 'The number of Indian students choosing Russia has declined significantly, by at least 50%, in recent years due to these issues.
