Hiking Trail Days 109-111: 4th of July Boat Trip & Fireworks in Marion, MA! (2026)

The 4th of July: A Day of Rest and Reflection on the Appalachian Trail

As I sit here, reflecting on the past few days, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the kindness and generosity I've encountered along the way. The Appalachian Trail, with its ever-changing landscapes and diverse communities, has become a microcosm of the human experience, where strangers become friends and kindness knows no bounds.

On Day 109, I arrived at the Catamount Inn in Bennington, VT, ready to rest and recharge. Little did I know that I was about to experience a day of unexpected kindness. The motel owner, Peter, offered to drive me to the Verizon store, where I needed to get my phone fixed. This small act of generosity set the tone for the day, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for the help I was receiving.

The next day, on Day 110, I woke up to the smell of bacon and coffee, a perfect start to the day. After a nice breakfast, I took some time to catch up on my blog posts, which had fallen behind since getting stitches a few weeks ago. But the day's highlight was swimming in the bay, a refreshing break from the heat. The fireworks show that evening was a nice finale to a great day on the water.

On Day 111, I spent the day off trail, relaxing and reflecting on the past few days. I caught up on my blog posts, did some hiker chores, and even went sailing on a sailboat for the first time. The experience was both exciting and a little apprehensive, but I was surprised to not have any seasickness. The day ended with another bar pizza and a brookie sundae, a perfect end to a perfect day.

What makes these days particularly fascinating is the way they showcase the human connection and the power of kindness. The Appalachian Trail is a journey of self-discovery, but it's also a journey of connection with others. The people I've met along the way have become like family, and their generosity has left an indelible mark on me.

In my opinion, the Appalachian Trail is more than just a physical journey. It's a journey of the heart, where kindness and generosity are the currency of the trail. The people I've met along the way have taught me that the greatest treasures are not found in the landscapes, but in the connections we make along the way. So, as I continue on my journey, I'll carry with me the lessons I've learned and the kindness I've received, knowing that it will continue to shape my experience on the trail and beyond.
