In a surprising twist, the focus of conversation at the Dubai Desert Classic was not on the tensions surrounding LIV Golf but rather on wines. Tyrrell Hatton quickly put to rest any speculation about a potentially awkward atmosphere with Rory McIlroy during their upcoming rounds together. McIlroy, while fulfilling his media obligations before the tournament, expressed his views on the hefty penalties—amounting to millions—for Hatton and Jon Rahm due to their involvement with LIV Golf, urging them to resolve the issue soon.
What makes McIlroy's comments particularly significant is that he was set to share the course with Hatton for the first two rounds at the Emirates Club. However, any suggestion of bad blood between these Ryder Cup teammates was swiftly dismissed, both through their on-course interactions and Hatton’s subsequent remarks.
"We didn’t really touch on that topic at all," Hatton shared. "Honestly, I spent most of our time chatting with him about whether he enjoyed any good wines over the Christmas period. Apparently, his selection was far superior to mine, although I was quite pleased with my own choices. He was also quite shocked when I told him my weight as of January 1st."
As for that weight, Hatton revealed he tipped the scales at 204 pounds. "At 5 foot 8 inches tall, that's quite hefty," he reflected. "Before the Ryder Cup, I was around 190 pounds, so I've definitely put on some weight—about a stone! December was indulgent for me, with little exercise and plenty of drinks, including having a Guinness tap at home. Now, I think it’s time to shed a few pounds."
Hatton made it clear he has no intention of falling out with McIlroy, stating, "I did catch up on what was said regarding the fines, and as Rory mentioned, that’s just his viewpoint. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I’m hopeful that a solution will be reached soon, as I believe there’s a collective desire for that to happen."
His impressive performance, scoring a two-under-par 70, stood out, especially considering the evident rustiness in his game. This showcases the exceptional skill of top golfers; they can deliver solid performances even when they aren’t at their best. "I felt like I was turning like the Titanic out there," Hatton admitted. "I’m still feeling stiff and this seems a bit early for me."
McIlroy, too, wasn't playing at peak form, finishing with a score of 73, while Tommy Fleetwood, joining them in this elite group, matched McIlroy’s score.
Francesco Molinari reminded everyone of his talent with an impressive 65, followed by a moment of sportsmanship. Many speculate that he might step in as a backup candidate should Luke Donald decline another term as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain—a delicate situation for Molinari, who remains supportive of Donald.
"All of us are hoping Luke returns for one more round as captain, including all the players and support team he’s worked with over the past four years," Molinari expressed. "While I wouldn’t refuse if asked, I’d love for it to happen. But if it doesn’t, I’m perfectly okay with that. Everyone who participated in the last two Ryder Cups would be thrilled to see him lead again."
Unfortunately, Donald was unable to make an appearance at the event after withdrawing due to health concerns.
