Get ready to feel the rhythm! The 2025 Dakar en Jeux sports program is not just about sports; it's a vibrant celebration of Senegalese culture, with music taking center stage.
Just 35 kilometers from the sporting action, Dakar's Train Express Régional (TER) Station is pulsing with the sounds of Senegal. Local musicians are treating visitors to a series of mini-concerts, showcasing the nation's rich musical heritage. Imagine the energy!
One of the stars keeping the crowds hyped is none other than Chaanel Rhythm, also known as DJ Chanel. She's a familiar face, having headlined the last three Dakar en Jeux events.
"In Senegal, our history runs deep," DJ Chanel explained to Olympics.com from her DJ booth near the Dakar railway station. "We have a special bond with our music. The Sabar, for example, is our language." She was referring to the distinct Senegalese music style. The station is the final stop on the line connecting the western tip of the country with the new city of Diamniadio.
"With the sabar (the traditional drum), we communicate. With mbalax (a popular urban dance music), we connect. There are so many musical styles we use to stay connected," she continued. "There's also a strong connection between sports and music because major sporting events happen in Senegal every year."
But here's where it gets interesting... The blend of sports and music creates a unique atmosphere. What do you think about the integration of music into sporting events? Does it enhance the experience, or could it potentially distract from the game? Share your thoughts in the comments!
