Aging Erie County: A Tale of Population Decline and Shifting Demographics
Erie County is facing a unique challenge as its population slowly shrinks while its residents age. This trend, revealed by the U.S. Census Bureau's recent estimates, paints a picture of a county in transition. The county's population, estimated at 269,052 in the 2020-2024 American Community Survey, has decreased by approximately 4,800 people since the 2015-2019 estimates. However, the aging population is a notable shift. The percentage of residents aged 65 and older has increased from 17.4% to a significant 19.7%. This means that despite the overall population loss, the number of seniors has grown by over 5,500, and the median age has slightly increased to 40.2 years.
And this is the part most people miss: younger age groups are shrinking. The population under 18 has declined, and even the 25-34 age group has seen a slight drop. Despite this, Erie County's immigrant population has grown modestly, with an increase in the share of foreign-born residents.
The American Community Survey, an ongoing five-year survey, provides these estimates, offering a more reliable analysis of long-term trends compared to single-year surveys. The Census Bureau released these estimates in January, giving us a glimpse into the county's future.
In terms of housing and education, the county has seen a slight decline in the number of housing units, suggesting a stable housing supply despite population loss. Educational attainment has increased, with more residents achieving higher levels of education. Other economic indicators show stability, with minor fluctuations.
