This exciting news comes from pension consultant Corine Reedijk of Aon, who revealed that the new system's unique approach to calculating benefits is the key factor. By basing pensions on fund returns instead of funding ratios, the need for substantial financial buffers is reduced, allowing for more generous distributions. While it enables substantial increases, it also exposes pensions to greater risk in the event of market downturns.
The financial markets' strong performance this year has also played a role in these substantial hikes. Many retirees will be delighted to learn that these increases will be applied retroactively from April 1, ensuring they don't miss out on a penny.
So far, 24 pension funds have embraced the new system, with the construction and hospitality sectors leading the way in terms of increases. The Metal and Technology Pension Fund (PMT), however, has seen more modest gains.
Looking ahead, major funds like ABP, the Netherlands' largest, are set to transition next year. Participants can anticipate similar increases, assuming economic conditions hold steady.
