The dire state of global climate change efforts has been highlighted by Chris Bowen, Australia's climate change and energy minister, who agrees with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's assessment that the international consensus on tackling climate change has eroded.
In a bold statement, Starmer declared, "The consensus is gone" at the Cop30 climate summit in Brazil, a decade after the historic Paris Agreement in 2015. He emphasized the unity and determination of world leaders in Paris, but sadly, that consensus no longer exists.
Starmer argued that green energy policies are a win-win situation, benefiting both the planet and economic growth. However, his stance contrasts with Donald Trump's retreat from global cooperation and his controversial claim that climate change is a hoax.
Bowen, who is overseeing Australia's ambitious 2035 emissions target and will attend the summit in Belém, supported Starmer's view. He acknowledged the challenges and contestation surrounding climate action but emphasized the importance of science-backed policies.
"The science hasn't changed since the Paris accord," Bowen said. "Net zero by 2050 is the bare minimum needed to keep global warming as close to 1.5C as possible."
The race to host Cop31 in 2026 is heating up, with Australia and Turkey vying for the opportunity. Australia proposes hosting the event in Adelaide, in collaboration with Pacific Island countries, while Turkey remains in the running despite lacking support from key partners.
Bowen expressed disappointment at the prospect of neither country winning the hosting rights, emphasizing the importance of Pacific Island nations having a voice in these negotiations. He also criticized the Liberal party's impending decision to abandon support for net zero policies, describing it as a sad turn of events.
"As an Australian, I wish our alternate government was more persuaded by the overwhelming scientific consensus and the economic benefits of a sensible climate approach," Bowen said.
