UK Orders Poultry Kept Indoors as Bird Flu Spreads
The UK government has issued a critical directive, mandating that all poultry in England be kept indoors due to a surge in avian influenza cases. This decision, effective from Thursday, is a response to the escalating threat posed by the virus.
The statement emphasizes that bird keepers across England must ensure the safety of their poultry and captive birds, especially those with more than 50 birds or those involved in the sale or distribution of eggs. This measure is an extension of similar restrictions already in place in parts of northern, central, and eastern England.
UK Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss explained the necessity of this step, citing the increasing number of avian influenza cases in both domesticated and wild birds. Despite the concern, the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs assures the public that the risk to human health remains low, and properly cooked poultry and eggs are safe for consumption.
The situation is part of a broader European crisis, with 85 avian flu outbreaks recorded on poultry farms across Europe between August 1 and late October, according to the ESA animal health monitor. Britain, in particular, has experienced six outbreaks during this period.
In January, the UK government took proactive measures, including mandatory culls within a three-kilometre radius of confirmed cases and enhanced hygiene protocols. However, vaccinations against bird flu are currently prohibited in the UK, except for zoo animals, leaving the country vulnerable to the virus's spread through droppings, saliva, and contaminated food and water.
