In a groundbreaking move, Barnsley has been designated as the UK's inaugural "Tech Town" by government officials, aiming to establish itself as a pioneering center for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into daily life.
This prestigious title signifies that AI technologies will be implemented across various public services, including educational institutions like schools and colleges, businesses, and the National Health Service (NHS).
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized that Barnsley would serve as a "national blueprint" for demonstrating how technology can enhance life in ways that are more accessible, equitable, and prosperous for its residents.
Kendall stated, "If we can demonstrate that AI aids young learners, boosts local business productivity, and enhances public services, we can showcase what is achievable across the nation."
Prominent companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, and Adobe have shown their support for this initiative, committing to improving local access to future job opportunities.
Barnsley Council has announced that free training in AI and digital skills will be provided to workers through partnerships with Barnsley College and the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology. Additionally, residents interested in upgrading their skills or considering a career shift will have access to complimentary courses.
A collaboration with Barnsley Hospital is planned to pilot AI tools aimed at streamlining patient experiences, including quicker check-ins, expedited triage processes, and enhanced outpatient care.
In educational settings, AI and edtech solutions will be trialed within schools and at Barnsley College to assess their impact on student outcomes, promote inclusivity, and alleviate teacher workload.
Sir Stephen Houghton, the leader of Barnsley Council, remarked, "One of the central goals of our Inclusive Economic Growth Strategy is for Barnsley to emerge as the premier digital town in the UK. Welcoming the secretary of state to announce our status as the UK's first Tech Town underscores our ambition and dedication to innovation that will benefit our residents, businesses, and partners. This initiative represents one of the most significant investments in Barnsley's history and will reinforce our long-term economic prospects."
Oliver Coppard, the Mayor of South Yorkshire, added, "Thanks largely to the efforts spearheaded by Steve Houghton and Barnsley Council, we are constructing a larger and more robust economy in South Yorkshire, generating jobs and opportunities within industries that will define the future. This recognition from the government of Barnsley as the UK's first Tech Town reflects our progress. We have already cultivated a vibrant digital ecosystem, from the Seam Digital Campus to the expanding network of digital and creative enterprises, alongside advanced training initiatives at Barnsley College and the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology. Barnsley possesses all the essential elements for a successful and modern tech economy."
